What is Chikankari Work?
Chikankari is an embroidery technique done with the white cotton thread on fine white cotton material. Chikankari is also known as shadow work. The term 'Chikan' is derived from the Persian word 'Chikeen'. Traditionally, Chikankari needlework was done on mul-mul fine muslin cotton.
Which city is Chikankari from?
Chikankari is a traditional embroidery style that originated in the city of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is also known for its exquisite white threadwork, which creates lovely patterns and designs on fine muslin fabric. Chikankari has a long history that traced back several centuries.
Chikankari embroidery history has its origins in the City of Nawabs and is regarded as one of the most traditional and old embroidered styles.
However, these stitched designs are devoid of all colour, ornamentation, and noticeable accent.
Origin of chikankari
There are references to embroidery similar to chikan work in India as early as 3rd century BC by Megas. However, these embroidered patterns lack any colour, ornamentation, decoration, or any notable embellishment.
According to Laila Tyabji, chikankari evolved from Shiraz's white-on-white embroidery, which came to India as part of a Persian noble’s culture at the Mughal court. The most well-known origin story credits Noor Jahan, The Mughal empress and Jahangir's wife, with introducing chikankari to India. Chikankari began as a type of white-on-white (or whitework) embroidery.
Stitches used in chikankari
The patterns and effects produced are determined by the stitches used and the thicknesses of the threads used. Backstitch, chain stitch, and hemstitch are some of the stitches. A pattern of open work, lace, or shadow-work is the end result. Frequently, the embroiderer creates mesh-like sections by using a needle to separate threads in the ground fabric, and then working around the spaces. 32 stitches make up this pattern.
A long-running or darning stitch called chikankari-tepchi is made using six strands on the right side of the fabric, crossing over four threads and picking up one. Thus, a line is formed. It is used principally as a basis for further stitchery and occasionally employed to create a simple shape.
What kind of material works best for Chikankari dresses?
The type of fabrics that Chikan embroidery is typically done on is one of its key features. Muslin, organdy, voile, net, and mul-mul are the fabrics that are most frequently used for chikankari. These fabrics are all perfect for chikankari since they each have unique properties that set them apart. Also the embroidery is primarily done on lightweight fabrics such as cotton, semi-Georgette, pure Georgette, crepe, chiffon, silk, and other similar fabrics that can highlight the embroidery. If the fabric is too hard or thick, the embroidery needle won't be able to pierce it. Now a days Chikankari dresses are not only made of white-on-white embroidery, but also available in various hand dyed natural colours.
